Proving Korea is more than K-pop and Gangnam style, Jambinai bring together the exotic sounds of Korean folk music to bear with a powerful post-rock, heavy metal sound and style, creating a genre unto its own. Their music uses traditional instruments like the piri (a type of oboe) and the geomungo (from the zither class of instruments) alongside the electric guitar and bass, and other familiar instruments.
Their sound is atmospheric, elegant, and at times eerie, interspersed with sudden bursts of fierce energy and powerful rhythm. The show is well paced, their performance varied, with moments dedicated to experimental play followed by headbanging tracks that bring the audience to a frenzy.
Jambinai don’t only make folk music relevant to present times, they reinvent it. This trio from Seoul are a new breed of musicians, combining tradition, performance and sensory experience in a blockbuster performance packed with power.
